A Women’s Perspective

Currently on exhibition is “Straight From Cuba; A Women’s Perspective” that features the works of five different female artist from Cuba, each expressing a unique reaction to cultural expectations, gender roles and historical stereotypes. Lisandra Isabel Garcia’s portraits, the female form is juxtaposed by overlays of classical European nudes creating a dialogues about both the evolution of female sensuality and traditions of classical painting by creating graphic rather than naturalistic depictions of the human body.

Another of our amazing Cuban artist we are featuring this month is the talented Adislen Reyes Pino. Working with graphite and paper, her collection marries modern dilemmas, societal anxiety and humor with small glimpses in to the life of a sometimes androgynous but mostly female protagonist. She universalizes and simplifies the daily issues of modern life. Instead of utilizing the traditional symbol for mankind as male, she breaks the mold and introduces the female character with which to empathize.

In Our Gallery Store we are proud to carry the works of many creative females from around the globe. Each with their own cultural legacy and aesthetic, they bring something new and original.

Another woman artist we are proud to represent is Angela Rossi and her wonderful Beat Up Creations. Rossi, hailing from the United States, uses antique plates, cups and more to give them a second life. Through the application of humorous images, she digitally constructs portraits and adds them to everyday dinnerware pieces. In the combination of the two concepts she is defying assumptions of propriety and normality while touching on the genius of reclaiming both discarded objects and cliché imagery. Her art form takes what is traditionally thought of as beautiful to create a new aesthetic.

Margaret Dorfman is another artist that uses alternative material to create decorative housewares. Margaret Dorfman brought us a collection of vessels that are built slice by slice from natural sources such as beets, carrots and papaya and hand shaped into translucent bowls. Dorfman challenges the notion of décor and the everyday function of dishware by taking what appears to be temporary and giving it utility and longevity.

Women of today constantly push borders and boundaries on what is expected and acceptable for our society. It is with pride that we represent all of these women who create work that is both beautiful and thought provoking for our visitors. Whether they define themselves as artists, crafters, designers, or simply creators we are to have their work to share with the world.
